In the evening after our cloudy trip up the mountain we looked out the window of our hostel room and this is what we saw –
The next morning we had a ‘meeting’ – should we go up the Gornegrat again or should we not. Although we had Swiss half fare cards it was still an expensive trip at about $45. But the day was so beautiful it was decided that it would be worth it.
As we walked into town we were presented with this classic view of the Matterhorn from the bridge over the meltwater stream.
Up the same route, this time in bright sun and a very different scene when we reached the top. Aby was back on top of the wall and the views worth the cost of the extra train trip. The Matterhorn is truly a fine mountain, previously only seen on chocolate boxes and Toberone wrappers. Skydivers were swinging past and we watched them from above. We have no idea where they landed and how they got home. The look-out was also a great place for a bit of relaxing in the sun.
After saturating ourselves with views we sat outside this time and enjoyed our lunch. The blackbirds were interested in our lunch too. We wandered around, took some pictures and then took the train down to the next station
We took the train down from Gornegrat and got off at Riffelberg Station where we did a bit of a wander. There were many small flowers growing in cracks and amongst rocks taking advantage of the spring sunshine. The rocks were warm and shaped just right for a relax and enjoyment of the environment.
Here is a selection of the flowers that we saw growing amongst the rocks and in crevasses in the Riffelberg area. These are all high alpine plants that grow in a harsh environment with a short summer.
