We stayed for two nights in Sorrento, at the bottom of the cliffs at Hotel Il Faro (link to E26-055). Most of the smart hotels, actually almost all the hotels are on top of the cliff.
Definitely check out these cliffs, they are so steep and solid. They help one visualise the massive impact Vesuvius has had on the geology and geography of the area. Do walk up or down the path, it is interesting to think of the early visitors and fishermen who would have walked up here carrying their loads. But also take the lift inside the cliff, even with out baggage it is fun to think that you are travelling vertically in a cliff of volcanic rock !
