From our rooftop window in our hostel room we could see the top of Mt Floien, so we went there. Aby took the path up and Dee took the inclined railway.
We met at the top and walked down together. The walk is about 45 minutes through fresh green forest.
Views from the top showed Bergen beyond the coastal centre and we could see how the city extended up the valleys. Also could see the islands protecting the coast. We watched ships and ferries and enjoyed the sun. (and ate an icecream)
Back down to sea level were we visited the fortress and a medieval dining hall, but the fortress was about to close and the dining hall was being used by the Queen. So we stood outside and watched the Queen drive out, then a bit of pageantry as the people who had been dining with her walked out in their national costumes.
We found that with the late setting sun we were prone to missing some of the closing times, felt like the mid afternoon, meanwhile it was 5 in the evening !
The trip up the railway is great for the views going up and at the top. We recommend walking one way as well.
