St Mark’s Basilica – going up the dome

After a bit of a talk we went up the lift then up 395 steps  up to the top of the dome.  Very tiring and quite perturbing as walking between walls curved and leaning inwards.  After the lift we walked around the high gallery, just above the writing. This gave us views down to the floor as well as closeups of the glittering mosaics

After lots of steps we were rewarded with great views of the city.  Even now, no buildings are allowed to be taller than here !.

We spent time on the roof before taking the lift back down.

  • The good, the bad and the ugly ?
    • Great to have climbed up the dome
    • Scary heights
    • Many steps – is tiring and stressful
    • Don’t do if claustrophobic
    • Too many people
    • A bit too sparkly and overt
    • A visit to Rome should always include a visit to the Vatican City.
