Some Venetian Canals – The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal on our first day

The Grand Canal is truly GRAND. It snakes through the city in a big wide ‘S’ shape. All the biggest and smartest buildings, hotels, churches and palaces are on the canal. St Marks Square, St Pauls and The Doges Palace are the only really grand buildings not on the canal.

It is a busy route for Vaporettos (busses), taxis, delivery boats and private boats

You can still arrive at your grand hotel by boat

A trip down The Grand Canal on the number one Vaporeto is a great way to see Venice. Try to choose a time when the commuters are not trying to get to work – although that is also an interesting experience
