Sussosvlei Camping area is where one stays to access the big dunes, Sesrein Canyon, Deadpan and the desert ! Each camp site had its own Kameeldoring tree and circular rock boundary. There are also more upmarket lodges in the area.
We were up early the next day to drive out into the dunes to watch the sun rise and walk to Dead Pan
We parked at the end of the road and walked through the sand and over the pan to DeadPan. Fossilised trees stuck in the sand dunes.
It is a very very long time since there was water for trees to grow this size, they are effectively fossilised
Some of our group walked back to the truck but we took a Uri, a locally designed sand vehicle – worth the extra
Much better than walking through hot sand
In the afternoon we visited Sesreim canyon which is in the same area. From the surface it is not easy to see, but is six reim deep, that is six stock whips.
walked down into the eroded canyon
