From Oslo we took a train to Bergen (with a side trim on the Flam Railway)
The train was a Norwegian Rail run, even though we started in Sweden. Our carriage was filled mostly with tour groups. We were lucky to have empty seats next to us so could scoot from side to side. From Oslo we travelled through country side and forests, climbing all the way. Fantastic views and lots and lots of tunnels. We came into areas covered in snow with frozen lakes which were just starting to melt. By this time the rain had cleared and the sun shone out on the snow and sparkled. So much land is farmed – intensive cultivation right up to the forest and so many small settlements. We climbed higher and higher and the snow got thicker. We hope the train windows were clean as we had to take pictures through the glass. Saw houses with grass growing on the roof.

We the train stopped and we got off at Myrdal Station, very much in the middle of nowhere. No roads. We waited with many others for the next train down to Flam and back. When we got back to Myrdal the Bergen train was waiting for us and we settled in with lots of space for the decent to Bergen. We travelled past massive lumps of rock and small settlement clinging to the edges of lakes and fjords. This was a great train ride, even without the trip to Flam it would have been great. So interesting doing the trip at a change of season, spring time
