Kaub is a quiet town, not sure if it gets much of the Rhine River tourist trade. Cobbled streets and irregular buildings. There is an old part and a new part. We are staying in a bit of a mixed area. They are very fond of their grape vines and we were surprised to see them carefully nurtured growing through the cobbles. In some places the trunk was 6 inches thick – that is on old vine.
Kaub is on the Rhine River and while we were there the river was in flood. On an island in the river is a castle which we had planned to visit, taking the ferry across, the ferry driver told us to watch the river height, digitally displayed on this old building – and when is dropped to a certain level his ferry would run again.
The Rhine is surprisingly busy, we are reminded that it has been a busy access route for 1000s of years and the motorway of the past. In addition to the river traffic there are railway lines on both sides and roads on both sides. And all in constant use.
