Introduction to Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island is a remnant of a volcanoe in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand. Is is part of Australia, and actually is part of New South Wales. It is 780km from Sydney, 10km long and a maximum 2km wide. It has only recently been settled by humans and has a permanent population of less that 400. Visitor numbers are limited to 400 and you may not visit without having booked accommodation. There are very fancy and expensive places to stay and they less fancy places to stay, but there is no-where that could be called cheap. Most goods are imported from the mainland and keep the price of everything high.

People visit the island for the wanderful diving, magnificent scenry, the safety, great walks and back to nature experience.
