We arrived at Goteborg as our first city in our first European adventure. We flew into Copenhagen and immediately took the train northward to Goteborg. Goteborg is Sweden’s second largest city and the largest port in the Nordic countries. It was founded in 1621 as a fortified trading colony.
We found it a lovely city, easy to navigate once we got the hang of the circular shape delineated by the old moat.
We stayed at a YHA affiliated hostel, took a canal boat ride, and walked all around the central area, bought local pastries and berries and had a good night’s sleep.
When compared to Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, Goteborg is more charming. It appears more of a city occupied by local people and a lot less tourists. It may be different in the cruise boat season.
