While we were taking our train along the Bernina Express Route we stopped at Cavaglia and walked to see the glacier potholes. These were very interesting and needed more than an hour, but that was all we had between trains. We left our bags at the station café/bar and walked to the pothole area. Aby enjoyed climbing down one of the potholes. She said it was cool and pleasant smelling of earth and herbs
The area had a network of paths with information signs. As well as looking at many types of pothole, learning how they were made, there were interesting and ladled plants and views to appreciate. In the lower area the stream is still flowing and still eroding.
We walk back to the station and had time for a quick icecream before the train arrived !
- The good and the bad of the Glacial Potholes at Cavaglia
- Very out of the way
- Required good balance and reasonable fitness to appreciate the site.
- Very interesting
- Rather an unusual thing to see
- Much more extensive and requiring more time than we anticipated
- There is fresh water and a small wine tasting facility (I think) in the area of the pot holes
- Clean, no litter, signposted
So went back again in 2019 and spent longer !
Next – Mowing a meadow
