A14–001 – Planning – what type are you ?
There is no right or wrong philosophy to planning, only a wrong way to plan !!! This article is only about travel philosophy. There is a whole range of travel philosophies from the ‘wing-er’ to the ‘millisecond’. Neither is wrong nor all those in-between (and you can mix and match) BUT you must make sure that all your group buy into the same philosophy.
- Rule number 1 – If you don’t put input into the plan – then you cannot complain
- Rule number 2 – Make sure everyone has an opportunity to input !
- Rule number 3 – Don’t mix extreme travel philosophy types in one group
Types of Planning Philosophies – where do you fit in ???
- Talk about it – never DO anything
- Winging it – lets go away next week
- Transport to destination – wing it when we get there
- Accommodation and transport
- will find out when we get there
- or a very basic idea what going to do
- Plan and book a basic structure but know all the either/or option for when you get there
- Plan and book all the important things
- Plan and book all fares, accommodation and activities
- Millisecond planning, everything planned to the second. At 10.02 have coffee
Our Planning Philosophy !
Although I have a love of a good plan “boer maak ‘n plan” the level of planning depends in the trip – but I must admit that as Type 1 – the complete winger is just not for me, nor does it fit into my lifestyle. I also need some security which I learnt on my first solo plane trip, that one should always know where one is going to spend the first night at a new place. Here are some examples of dreadful situations – dreadful to me, might be exciting and stimulating to others ….
- Arrive in a new place and have absolutely no idea where the cheap and safe accommodation is
- Arrive in a town thinking there will be plenty of places to stay and find out there is a festival on and nowhere to stay for a 100km
- Having a transport delay and arriving in a strange place after dark and relying on a taxi driver to take you to a suitable hotel
- After a long day’s driving find out where you planned to stop for the night’s smaller than anticipated a ‘one horse town’ that has a dot on the map bigger than the town !
