First impressions of Valletta

Valletta is Malta’s capital and a strategic harbour in the Mediterranean

  • Big walls
  • Big buildings
  • Initially a lot of tourists, but thinned out quickly when the cruise ship left.
  • Old buildings
  • Many shops
  • Theatre Royal ruins
  • Cafés at a strange place
  • Lots of steps
  • Big bell
  • Cruise ships

Valletta was so much more dramatic than expected. Historically it has been of strategic importance, due to location and super safe harbour and the city has retained so much from the past.

A large portion of the city is modern high-rise, but not in the old harbour center.
