Diavolezza to Innsbruck by train

Up nice and early to pack, we need to catch the first cable-car down the mountain in order to reach Samaden in time for our Austrian Railjet train. Oops – look out the window – it’s snowing !   Very windy with swirling snow.  Went outside to take pictures anyway.

After a lovely cheese, bread and cold meat breakfast we caught the first car down the mountain at 8.00am in the snow.  Just us and the driver.

Ticket machine at a small Swiss Station. If you can not work it, just buy on the train.

Walked down a small way in the snow to the lonely station.  Struggled to buy a ticket a ticket at the automated machine – so settled for a ticket to Pontressina.

Bernina Diavolezza Station, high in the Alps

This was our route for the day, the only train we prebooked was the Railjet, rest just hop on and sit where ever you like.

  • Diavolezza to Pontressina
  • Pontressina to Sargans
  • Sargans to Chur
  • Chur to Sameden
  • Then Railjet to Innsbruck

Sargans to Chur – lady conductress told us about the photographic carriage compartment at the end of the train – amazing, floor to ceiling windows, glass roof and electric opening windows.  All to myself !

Engineering marvels

Not pleased with Railjet – too crowded with people who could not find a seat nor find a place for their luggage and people sitting in reserved seats.  So we put our luggage in one cartridge, chucked a family out of our reserved seats and settled in for the journey..  Comfy enough, but crowded, people having to stand.  Some stunning scenery.

Arrived at Innsbruck, and, after getting a map we walked to the Marmota Hostel where we stayed for the next two nights.
