The white layer is the waterproof layer, working fine for this building
Poorer quality construction with a thinner waterproof layer which is not working well
Waterproof layer is at water level, so the bricks are wet and degrading
Thicker waterproof layer but still getting splashed by boats and the bricks are getting wet

Did you think you were going to get a collection of pretty pictures ! Venice was designed very well but did not take into account –

  • Wakes of motor driven boats
  • De-watering below ground causing the soils to shrink
  • Changing sea levels
  • Gravity – through time the heavy buildings have sunk into the mud
