Botswana in two weeks in 2008

This trip to Botswana was added on the end of a trip to South Africa in 2008.  We joined a small tour group (which unfortunately was a bit too big) and did a loop through Botswana and Zambia.  We chose this tour group as although camping, was still catered and spent four nights in the Okavango Delta.  Botswana is a large, low populated country with, relative to the rest of Africa, a better standard of living.  Tourism is a big industry but their policy is ‘high cost, low impact’  The knock on effect of this for people like us is that there are few opportunity for middle of the road travel.  Difficult to self-drive as the roads are terrible, the distances great and the facilities minimal.  But if you want to fly in, stay in a luxury Lodge and fly out it is wonderful.  In addition the ‘wilderness’ areas are not at all managed, (especially compared to South Africa) and if you self-drive you start to feel you are paying a lot and  getting very little.
