Behind the scene tour of the Doges Palace

We joined our ‘Secret Itinerary’ tour of the Doges Palace.  We went into areas of cells and administration.  Saw construction of the building and the attics.  Many narrow and steep corridors and steps.  Then walked back though the public areas, more cells and the Bridge of Sighs.

The Doges Palace in the morning
The Doges Palace
A plan, we walked from the bottom to the top
We walked along many long and narrow corridors
Checked out a whole pile of different cells and learnt about we occupied then and who escaped. With particular emphasis on Casanova.
Look at the worn steppes
Strong, small door and big bolts
Up steps into the administration areas
The grandness of your work area was a direct link to your importance
The meeting room
Under the roof
There was an interesting museum with old military equipment in the attic
The courtyard with two wells
Back down the stairs
And we popped out into the public area through a wardrobe !

Secret Itinerary Tour, E20

  • Nice and peaceful
  • Not super interesting
  • Great to see the back areas and secret passages
  • Good value
  • Too much Casanova
  • Architecturally interesting
  • Public areas overwhelming – too much

We enjoyed the tour and found the contrast between the administration rooms and prison area with the public rooms a bit overwhelming. But if we only saw the public rooms we would not have enjoyed our visit anywhere as much !

Next – Doges Palace, we visited the public rooms (part of the ticket)
