Rome – first impressions and walking to the Pantheon

After settling in we took a walk, in particular to see the Pantheon as it is closed on some days.  Walking in Rome is fun and tiring.  Most people walk and it is busy.

One of the first things we noticed about Rome was that there were no tall buildings. There is a height limit which makes for a lighter brighter city. The Tiber is wide and in a big channel with many bridges crossing it. Traffic is chaotic and busy, but much more organised than we expected. As long as you cross the road on a crossing it is fine, everyone stops for you. Rome is full of tourists but unlike Venice, it is not a tourist city and full of Romans living in their place. We were very surprised at Rome and will be happy to go back there and spend longer exploring its history and architecture.
