Stockholm to Lubeck by train

Our route for the next two days.

We walked to the station on a nice sunny morning.  Had a few issues as we had arrived by bus and there are three stations, bus, local train and long distance trains.  Found our Swedish Rail high speed train.  Comfy enough but unfortunately travelling backwards.  The left side faced forward while the right side faced backward, did not make for a pleasant train ride.

When we arrived in Copenhagen we went for a short walk, was not impressed, dirty, smelly and uninviting.

Next train  – an ICE German high speed long distance train.  Much comfier, facing forward and 2nd row from the front and slightly isolated from the rest of the carriage.  Great excitement as they put the whole train on the ferry for a 45 minute sea crossing.  Such an accurate location of the ferry to align the rails.  We where not allowed to stay in the train for the crossing so we joined all the truck drivers and climbed the steps and spent the journey watching the sea go by.  We had to get back to our train just before we reached harbour.

We know of trains going on ferries, but really surprised us that the top of the line high speed modern train still goes by boat.

Aby spoke with the driver of the ICE train and got onto the flight deck for the train leaving the ferry.  Got instructions.

As the front of the ferry dropped down we were aligned perfectly with the rains on land.  A couple of trucks drove out, then half a train, we stopped briefly while the other half joined up and off we went !  Just like that.

As we neared Lubeck the train was delayed.  We watched the driver get out and manually close the boom gates for a road crossing, something we have never seen before.  We sat at a small station just outside Lubeck and waited, they opened the doors so that the smokers could get out, and we stayed there for about 40 minute.  As we were 2 hrs late when we arrived at Lubeck we caught a taxi to the hostel.

  • The good and the bad of the ICE train
    • Comfy enough
    • Efficient
    • Fun going on a ferry
    • Too fast – cannot see the view
