Through the years we have done a lot of travelling and a lot pf photograph taking ! As a result many people have asked about our trips.
Travel changed for us with the advent of the FAX MACHINE, prior to this your really did need to use a travel agent and leave most of it all up to them, snail mail and their wholesalers. This was closely followed by the INTERNET. Planning has become much much easier but the volume of information has become amazing and with it, the worry of ‘truth’ and safety.
Close on the heels of the internet was DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY and computer manipulation on pictures. Suddenly we are all knowing and all seeing and have no idea about the integrity of the information. [by the way I am just as good as anyone to supply ‘false’ information – remove the lamp post in a picture, only show good weather, select the best view, Photoshop out the refuse and generally give an enhanced glamour look]
We have done many forms of travel
- Self-drive
- Public trains
- Cruise Ships
- Occasionally a bus
- Shanks pony
- Even considering cycling in the future
- Tour groups
- Overland truck type
We have done short trips and long trips, cities, countryside, mountains, jungles, ice and water. There are many places that we would love to go back to, some a bit so-so but rarely any ‘never again’ places.
There are highlights and lows, little special moments and whole days of good kama.
Just to get into the mode I am thinking of any low-lights – places that generate a negative feeling and a few pop into my head –
- Copenhagen – was only there for a short time on a Sunday near the station
- It was very grubby
- Human filth in the street
- Nowhere to sit and wait comfortably for a train
- A couple of places in Africa that I would avoid, some small towns that just did not feel good/safe/right.
- There are places I would avoid if I could, cities like Johannesburg, Sydney, Hamburg and Wilcannia
What about highlights ? These will change (like low-lights) as time goes on, but as I sit and write the following pop into my head
- The high plateaus of Switzerland
- Great game parks like Kruger, South Africa
- The beaches of Queensland, Australia
- Glacier mountains of New Zealand
- Rocky mountains of the Cedarberg, South Africa
- Arctic Botanic Garden in Tromso, Norway
What I have learnt through all the years is the importance of planning – so we get to write a whole section on planning [A14].
I will also try to discuss the photography, the history, the rules, the goods, bads and uglies. Experience is a wonderful thing. Will include a bit about packing, shopping and how important it is to have a philosophy.
