Travelling north, regularly stopping and sailing in and out of fjords and harbours. Our next big stop was Trondheim where we docked at 6am for a 6 hour stop. After breakfast we walked into town to check out the cathedral – a seriously amazing building. Walked back through town and spent the rest of the day on-board admiring the scenery and occasionally going under bridges.
Trondheim Cathedral – very grand , build over 300 years, the style did change slightly as time went by. Originally build to contain the bones of Saint Olaf. We took a guided tour which is often good value as you learn so much more. No photography inside as this is still parish church, although I love to take pictures I do feel that the atmosphere is ruined by clicking and flashing and selfy’ing. We were impressed that so many people walked in, and went to sit in a pew, sit in a quiet and subdued manner, and appreciate the whole environment
As a person working in engineering/construction I am amassed at how such a magnificent building could have been designed and built without the tools we have today, think of project management spread sheets, fancy calculators, lazer surveying, structural calculations, and so on.
Comments at end of trip – This cathedral/church was by far the best we saw. It is still a place of wordship, the visitors were very well behaved. It was not crowed in with newer buildings so one could really appreciate the style and architecture, set amoungst trees and gardens. The guilded tour was good and incuded in the entry fee.
