Alleyways in Venice

In Venice we have The Grand Canal, then there are the less grand ones. Then there are numerous alleyway and walkways between the canals and the squares. Initially we felt a level of nervousness walking down an unknown route, with tall dark buildings and dark doorways, not knowing where we would end up. But very soon we got the hang of it and realised that some of these are actually fairly important thoroughfares.
