First impressions of Venice

Venice – there is no place like it

For us, like many people, Venice is on the list of places that should be seen. We were unsure how we would handle the crowds, not just the volume of people, but the way the city is treated as a theme park. We chose to stay four nights in order for us to get an in depth appreciation of the strange, historic and fascinating city.

Contrasts

We had a rather stressful walk from the tram station to our accommodation. All the people were a shock, and the station area one of the worst. As we had relatively heavy bags, packpacks, and it was wet, there are no pictures from our initial walk. After dropping bags we went out for our first walk. From our first impression the simplistic word to describe ‘CONTRAST”

You walk everywhere, unless you catch a boat !
Something familiar but different – a petrol station
Everything is proportioned differently, tall buildings, narrow walkways
  • No cars
  • Vaporettos = water buses
  • no roads
  • tall buildings
  • narrow walkways
  • trollies for deliveries
  • boats for everything, taxi, police, construction, garage
  • derelict buildings
  • grand buildings
  • too many visitors
  • massive cruise ships
  • gondolas
  • fabulous history
  • decay
