The locks, all 20-ish of them, were magnificent pieces of engineering. Our boat dropped or rose 20 metres in 8 minutes – that is a lot of river flow !
They were also rather scary, sinking downwards into the wet concrete hole.
The boat was 11 metres wide and the locks are 12 metres, a lot of very careful management was needed.
Every lock was accompanied by a hydro-scheme, good use of resources.
